"It is believed that the first actual birthday cake was made in Germany in the Middle Ages. The Germans would celebrate children’s birthdays with cake, calling the celebration Kinderfest.Cakes originally were a coarse, bread-like product, and later became a much sweeter version, called Geburtstagorten."
At the beginning of last week, I turned 41. The numbers are starting to grow more and more. Another year starts, and one finishes. I normally take time between birthdays to meditate the things I wish to accomplish, the truth is the older I get the more calm I want to be.

Hello, welcome to my personal food blog "Kitchen and Letters"
This blog entry is long overdue, there has been a lot of changes in the past two weeks. I really wanted to write but I was a bit on an emotional pause. On the day of my birthday I decided to end an almost 3 years relationship, I wanted to enter to my 41 birthday being more me, with all my faults and wishes. The last two birthdays have hit me hard, I guess is the famous 40's crisis thing that I thought it was myth.
I took this photo during the summer of 2018, for my dogs birthday. Gaia turned 7 and Jade 9. Don't worry I did not give them the cake, it was the first time I decided to do a series of self portrait photos, I felt it was a good day to start.
Birthdays represent a day to celebrate YOU, or US. It seems that bigger the number more important, we celebrate them more than other milestones in our lives, and we do it normally share it with people we care. My mothers traditions was always to celebrate with a cake, even if she was abroad or we were abroad just to send a photo of a cake or sent something special in the post( when video calls where not a thing) and she tries to make it as special as she can, now she calls and send videos that she specially makes for each one of us( we are 5) She has been living in the USA for the last year. My stepfather used to send flowers to the girls in the house. Every time we could we always went out to celebrate with a Lunch or dinner. I continue the tradition when I moved abroad. I love going out for dinner at any time, but for my birthdays is that occasion that I pick a place that I either really want to go to or one that I feel super comfortable with but I go with someone new.
In contrary to other years, I decided this year to celebrate it with myself and get together with people one on one, not because of the pandemic, but because I have learned to value as I grow, more one to one relationships. Is the beginning of my 40's, they have come with many questions from which I do not have the answers for. I took hard decisions at the middle of my 40's and at the end of them. I have felt that I have been dragging and playing way to comfortably with time. I feel lucky this year, to my surprised I was celebrated by very special people for couple days after my birthday. I had the chance to reconnect with people that due to the pandemic I had not get the chance to see them.
take advantage of your birthday to reconnect with special people, as they tell you that they care for you, express the same feelings to them.
Birthdays are represented by milestones, when you are turning 18 we normally get super excited because in most countries we officially ADULTS. As we continue to celebrate more is expected from us, and more responsibilities we acquire, however I think most of us still feel like kids and we are trying sometimes to get off this crazy ride!
They can also be the time to reconnect with people, is so nice that people take the time to contact you and wish you great things. Birthdays are full of positivism.
When we blow those candles we truly believe that are wishes can come true, we blow the candles without chaos and full of hope, we believe in magic once more, I even imagine that in our minds as we close our eyes to blow the candles we go back to a special moment in our lives when we believe in magic. We should open the eyes and work for our wish! So next year we have another wish, even if your wish is "world peace" the world start with you.
Birthdays are a full on social celebration, whether you celebrate "alone" or have a party, birthdays are very special. I guess is part of my 41's meditation process, to celebrate, we are still here, we are growing yet staying as naive as we need to to continue enjoying the magical ride.
The Greeks would make round cakes to honor Artemis, the goddess of the moon. The lit candles on the cake represented the glow of the moon, and the smoke from the candles carried their prayers and wishes to the Gods who lived in the skies.
I love this last paragraph, as I'm writing this on a full moon! The moon works its magic.
