Cooking shows.

"One of the first television cooking shows, Cook's Night Out, aired on the BBC on 21 January 1937. Marcel Boulestin, who became famous in the English-speaking world for his cookery books on French cuisine, demonstrated the preparation of an omelet as part of the 15-minute program"

Hello and Welcome to my personal Blog "Kitchen and Letters"

The first time I watched a cooking show on T.V was when I moved to England, I don't think before that time I was interested in watching that kind of shows in T.V, and even that they existed. To be honest I do not remember, I do remember that I started watching after work either Greys Anatomy or Ready, Steady, Cook. I tend to go more towards Ready, steady, cook. Even at some point, while writing my thesis dissertation, thought it was a good idea if I could attend the show. I applied, did not get in. I sort of read or heard that cook shows started in England, and I did my research again and they did! It looks like U.S.A and the U.K have been competing in this subject( as in many others) to be at the top. Both countries have taken food to our homes.

Nowadays cook shows are in almost every country, we can learn to cook any style and learn about other peoples food culture in the comfort of out homes, we can find cook shows in Youtube( and basically anything else we desire to learn) and knowing the success, many channels have aired cooking shows for a very long time. Cook shows are a great way to learn the basics of cooking, mixing ingredients, learning about temperatures, etc. Give them a chance if you have not done so, most of them make my mouth melt!

I stopped watching cooking shows for a bit, the story is a bit personal, I will talk about it at some point, the important fact is that I have started again to watch and enjoy watching cooking show, and even cooking some of the recipes.

Recently I came across with the cooking show of Nadiya Hussain on Netflix, is so beautiful to look at her and her cooking, and for me that I'm returning to this delicious old habit, I have been enjoying it very much. In the first episode of Baking with Nadiya she bakes this incredible good looking cupcakes! OMG they looked so delicious.

This weekend I finally got the courage to bake them.

The first televised cooking programme in the world was in the United Kingdom on the BBC on Wednesday, 12 June 1946 at 8:55 pm. The programme, called simply “Cookery”, starred Philip Harben and was 10 minutes long. In this very first episode, he showed how to make lobster vol-au-vents.

I highly recommend you watching her show, there are some deliciousness there that you will love to experiment with. The cupcakes are super! however a bit on the sweet side. For those not living in England, she uses clotted cream, which is hard to find outside England, I did a mix of cream cheese and nata( Nata is the fat that sit on the top of the milk after has been heated, basically is milk fat) that in a way is something similar to clotted cream. This recipe made around 12 regular size cupcakes. I live in high altitude, I did pre-heated the oven for about 15 min at 190c, they still took around 35 min to bake.

Here is the recipe:

Icing:

150 gr of salter butter

350 gr of icing sugar

100 ml of melted strawberry Ice cream.

Cupcake mix:

110 gr of Clotted Cream( I mixed 80 gr of cream cheese and 70gr of Nata)

110 gr of sugar

110 gr of flour

2 eggs

vanilla to taste.

Oreo Cookies.

Fresh strawberries

To make this recipe I will leave you the link of the Netflix show so you have a better idea, and maybe try to bake some of her other recipes. In terms of sweetness, for me the recipe falls into I bit on the high sweet side, don't get me wrong, I do have sweet tooth, but I guess not that sweet so if you have a sweet tooth it will be ok, if you are not, it maybe a bit too sweet for you. Next time I make them I will reduce the sugar, and only use 2/3 of the sugar. Also I replace the Oreo cookies for regular sweet cookies smashed with a bit of butter.

It felt good to bake again, to enjoy baking and creating, I was a bit rusted, my confidence was not at its best. This recipe did jump on me to continue baking. I might try more recipes from Nadiya soon. Long in to my Instagram to look at the photos!

The next televised cooking programme to hit the air was just a few short months later across the Atlantic, on Friday, 30 August 1946 in America. That one, called “I Love to Eat”, starred James Beard, and was 15 minutes long, showing from 8:30pm to 8:45pm.

Let me know if you tried the recipe, will love to read you feed back! what changes you did to it? who did you share it with? I live alone, I had some and others I took to a friend as a thank you.

Thank you for reading me,

In Good Food,
