Dogs are FAMILY.

Kitchen are places where people bond and nourish, but not only people if you are like me a "dog mum" as we like to call it( we = modern society of single people with dogs! most of the time with no kids), kitchens have helped me bond with my girls, they enjoy spending time in the kitchen, dogs sense of smells is 100 times stronger than ours, they do recognize food they like and dislike just like we do, the also love sugary foods and as with humans is not good for them. Dogs are expert floor cleaners!!

Hello Welcome to my personal blog "kitchen and letters"

This photo was taken by a very dear friend of mine many years back, we went for a short walk to the hills around San Miguel, an area called Cabras, it was a later summer day. This is a great portrait of who we are, the love to go on long walk, we love the country side and we love to hang out together. My girls, as I like to call them most of the time, form a grand part of my life in general. We spend most of the day together. Jade and Gaia. Jade (black and white) is 11 years old and is Gaia's mother, Gaia(brown and white) is almost 9. They are border collies, aka: Super smart, easy to train, with a lot of energy and adorable dogs!!

For me is so important to keep them healthy for as long as I can, because of their age, we can say that they are senior dogs, specially Jade, as she is 11, still with a lot of energy and happy to play with anything around and go for long walks every day. Gaia is the sweet girl of the 2, she loves cuddles, follows us around.

Once a month I cook for them a pot with meat, grains, veggies, spices. I will share with you the recipe. I add this as an extra with their dog food, I think it adds that extra flavor and nutrition to their food, they love it! and when ever I'm cooking for them they know it! they hang out around the kitchen, smelling and waiting for me to put their food in containers so they can clean up the pot and spoon. I also made coconut oil with turmeric and I add half a tea spoon for them every day. This has helped them with hair growth, inflammation and because B. C are allergic to flees, this has helped them a lot with that too. Last year Jade was starting to feel pain in her lower back, I started to give her massages every time after our walks, until I started adding turmeric to her food, I have not had to give her a massage unless she asked for it for almost a year.

Disclaimer: The recipe below is a home made, I have done my research and I have taken natural dog food courses. However, every dog is different, consult with your vet if your dog has any allergies or health issues.

Cooked dog food.

Ingredients:

Big pot of fresh water.

bones

2 c. of rise

2 c. of lentils.

2 c. of oats

500 grams Meat. I add chicken livers.

natural gelatin

Turmeric about two teaspoons

cinnamon 2 teaspoons

Veggies: I like to add broccoli, carrots, cauliflower,

Coconut oil.

Some times I add anything else that I have leftover such as meet fat.

Method:

If you have any bones, add them first, let them simmer for about 30 min because you start adding the rest of the ingredients. Then I add the lentils, as they are the ones that take longer, soon after rice at the end I add the oats and the chicken livers in little pieces. The rest of the ingredients I add them as I see them. The last thing that I add is the coconut oil, normally I add this when cooked, and letting it cool. I leave this for one night, the next morning I put them in one litre containers with a lid and freeze them. The follow me all the time. As they know this is for them, they recognize the smell.

It does not take long to make around 1 and half hour plus the resting time.

Turmeric and coconut oil paste.

Ingredients:

5 tablespoons of organic(if possible) grown turmeric

300 grams of coconut oil.

Mix ingredients in a clean jar, leave it a room temperature.

You can use this to cook food for you too! just make sure you use a clean spoon every time!

Why do I cook this for them?

There are few reasons, the main one is that one day I thought of eating everyday the same, just imagine eating all your life those ugly dry nibbles of dog food? I also know that they are not the healthiest of foods, so by adding everyday this extra flavor for them and health, they not only feel MORE loved, and there is a connection with them and the kitchen, but also, they look forward to their next meal. Since me making this, they eat with more pleasure, it's easier for me to see if how they are feeling, if they are in good health. Some times I also add some plain corn tortillas, I discovered that Jade loves them! while Gaia is not a big fun of them, however if I add them with the rest of them, she loves them. Corn tortillas made by hand or in a local tortilleria is full nutrients.

Do you have dogs? or home pets?

Here I list 10 healthy reason why you should own a dog( if you have the time, space and money)
